At Keevil Church of England Academy, we believe that a high-quality computing education equips children to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world.  Through the learning the principles of information and computation, they develop skills to set up and manipulate digital systems through programming.  By becoming digitally literate, pupils are able to use and express themselves and their ideas through information and communication technology at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

Our curriculum is organised as a progression which facilitates the re-visiting of learning through recurrent themes, such that knowledge and understanding becomes embedded in children’s long term memory.  For details of this see the document below ‘Keevil CofE Academy Art  Knowledge and Skills Progression’.

We ensure our Computing Curriculum is rooted in the vision and ethos of the school, through ensuring that as well as delivering technical knowledge and skills lessons it also develop the Keevil Characteristics:

Through Computing lessons children learn how to communicate responsibly and safely in a range of different technological ways.  They require diligence and resilience as they learn how to use and apply knowledge they have learnt.  Through application of programming skills they have developed they have to problem-solve in a variety of different situations and scenarios.  Children are encouraged to support one another’s learning in the classroom, therefore growing their team work skills.


The school has 30 laptops which classes use for Computing lessons, as well as to support learning in other areas of the curriculum.  Children need to be able to use and apply the knowledge that they are taught in order to embed their understanding, so Computing lessons are predominantly practical.  Children are encouraged to use their Computing skills across the curriculum in order to both re-enforce these and to enable the development of their understanding of the purpose and power of technology in all areas.

Computing is delivered through specific units of work, as well as by exploring and developing links and topics that children encounter in their learning of other subjects.  The ‘Keevil CofE Academy Computing Curriculum Overview’ below, shows how these are carefully mapped to ensure that the National Curriculum is successfully delivered in a way that builds on prior knowledge and promotes long-term retention of learning.

All teaching in the school follows our Teaching and Learning non-negotiables and expectations to ensure a high standard of provision.


Through the delivery of our curriculum children are able to understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science including logic, algorithms and data representation.  They can analyse problems in computational terms, and can use their knowledge and skills to write programmes to solve these problems.  They are also responsible, competent, confident and creative uses of information and communication technology.
